Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy and Orthopedics in the School of Medicine

Megan Burgess is an assistant professor in the Program in Physical Therapy and Orthopedics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She is board certified in both orthopedics and women’s health. She is a lecturer, lab and assessment coordinator and lab assistant for foundational clinical skill courses and advanced courses integrating orthopedics with pelvic health. Clinically, she is a pelvic physical therapist, seeing male and female patients with urinary, bowel, and/or reproductive dysfunction, and women before, during and after pregnancy. Additionally, her work with clients addresses dysfunction of the lumbar, hip and sacroiliac regions. 

She currently assists with research within the Program of Physical Therapy through implementation of study design and protocol development for improving surgical outcomes for hernia repair through pre-operative physical therapy. Her scholarly works include content integration for a competency-based-education (CBE) curriculum and the role of physical therapy for select patient populations. She has been a guest on AAOMPT’s podcast series ‘Physical Therapy Interviews with Content Experts’ (Episode 115, April 2023). She also had the opportunity, through partnership with the Worldwide Fistula Fund, to teach orthopedic examination and clinical reasoning for physical therapy students at Mekelle University in Mekelle, Ethiopia in 2019.

Megan grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia. She received her B.S. and B.Ed. from the University of Virginia, and received her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis.  Megan and her husband Nathan have three children and two dogs. They attend Central Presbyterian Church.
