David Peters
McDonnell Douglas Professor of Engineering in the McKelvy School of Engineering
Dr. David A. Peters is the McDonnell Douglas Professor of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Applied Mechanics from Washington University in 1969 and 1970, respectively, and then his Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University in 1974. He has worked at McDonnell-Douglas Astronautics Company (1969-1970), the Army Research Labs/NASA-Ames (1970-1975), the Georgia Institute of Technology (1985-1991), and twice at Washington University in St. Louis (1975-1985 and 1991-present). Dr. Peters also served for thirteen years as the Chair of the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Washington University and is presently the Director of Graduate Studies in that department. (now called Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science).
Dr. Peters has been a Regional Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors of the American Helicopter Society since 1997, and he remains an adjunct faculty and Associate Director of the Georgia Tech Rotorcraft Center of Excellence. He is also an adjunct professor at Parks College of Aeronautics of St. Louis University. Professor Peters has published over 350 technical papers, has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Helicopter Society (1987-1990) and has was Technical Director of the AHS from 2014-2016. He has received the Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Nikolsky Award of the American Helicopter Society, the Reed Aeronautics Award of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Spirit of St. Louis Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is a Fellow of the AIAA, the ASME, the AHS, and the American Academy of Mechanics.
